Online Instructional Systems and Support Coordinator

Welcome to the University of Colorado's at Denver CU Online program!

I am Tim McMahon and it is great to live, work and play here. I have worked at the University of Colorado, with CU Online, for over two years. My title is "Online Instructional Systems and Support Coordinator" and I actually do coordinate activities related to online teaching and learning. I moved to Colorado from California in 2000 for the sunshine, the views and the water. Water is becoming scarcer, but the sunshine and views are fantastic! My beautiful wife Ellie and I recently purchased a home in the Castle Rock area, and we are happily getting settled in by changing the colors of all walls, ceilings, floors, doors and the siding. My commute to CU Denver is seldom the same now that I-25 is being enlarged to be the same size as most of the streets in California and the Light Rail parking lots seem to fill up by 5:30 AM. The views are fantastic!

I have been involved with people learning by staring at a computer screen since about 1988. I continue to explore this phenomenon and frequently stop staring at a computer screen long enough to wonder if and how this is all working. I have long held the premise that the use of computers is altering the way we "think" about learning, problem solving and communication and my current job allows me to gather and analyze information that I can apply to my premise. We are indeed living in interesting times.

If you are interested in learning about teaching or learning online, please email at tim.mcmahon@cudenver.edu or call at 303-315-3693. I would be glad to discuss the many aspects of this 'thing' that has been labeled Distance Learning, Online Learning, Web Enhanced learning, Hybrid Classes, web-based instruction, teaching with Course Management Systems, Learning Management Systems, face-to-screen learning, computer assisted learning, and sometimes simply web-enhanced email, among other things. There are no costs associated with getting started with learning what we do at CU Online, except for a little of your time. As Dr. Phil says in one of his ten laws, "People do what works!" and we know that learning using a computer connected to a network, works.

Thanks for reading and I look forward to meeting you with whatever mode of communication you choose.

Tim
