Hands on Lab #1: How to improve your course with media

In his one hour hands-on seminar, quick and easy techniques for creating a slideshow with audio in your course management system will be demonstrated. Time permitting, Rob will demonstrate how to create video introductions and vignettes using a web cam. Please note this session will focus on a narrow section of multimedia solutions without going into great depth. Written materials will be provided for further study.

The capabilities of Tegrity software to record audio, video, whiteboard and PowerPoint presentations into a ‘web-ready’ and ‘streaming capable’ file will be demonstrated. Examples of recorded lectures and other archived recordings will be shown, along with the current recording of the Symposium session. A brief discussion on how Tegrity can be used at CU Denver will be held, with questions addressed at the end of the session.

This presentation will include demonstrations of online and hybrid courses developed by CU Denver faculty. See how other faculty have developed their courses - get tips, new ideas, and questions answered.
Session Two: Technology Tools:
Camtasia Studio, Mike Mannino, the Business School
The presentation will show the usage of Camtasia Studio to develop software tutorials for Microsoft Access in an online database management course. Camtasia Studio supports desktop development of software tutorials and other instructional material. Camtasia Studio captures and synchronizes screen images, mouse movement, and voice. Camtasia Studio also generates streaming output of the media files that play at low bandwidth as well as higher bandwidth.

Respondus is a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that
can be printed to paper or published directly to Blackboard or eCollege.
Assessments can be created offline using a familiar Windows environment, or moved from
one eLearning system to another. This demonstration will include creating and uploading
exams into eCollege and into Blackboard.
Advanced Tools/Techniques for Online Content Development, Marty Tessmer, Jenn Light, & Scott Grabinger, CITT
The Center for Innovations in Teaching and Learning (formerly TLT) has developed online self-study training programs for CU's University Leadership Development Institute (ULDI). They will show examples from that work that use Macromedia tools and techniques for creating custom, online, instructional content.

Everything you wanted to know from your students but never got the chance to ask. Will include prepared questions solicited from faculty, and Q&A from the audience.

In this panel discussion, current online students will answer prepared questions solicited from faculty as well as take questions from the audience regarding their experiences with online learning.

- Session #1: Beyond text: Instructional design and multimedia in online courses:
Rob Korotky, eCollege
In his afternoon session, Rob will discuss several topics having to do with the pedagogy of media in online courses. Effective and non-effective uses will be highlighted and discussed, and technical concerns will be answered in Q&A. During the discussion several forms of Rich Media will be showcased, including streaming technologies, slideshow solutions and interactive animation (Flash).
- Session #2: What’s new at eCollege?
Brett Frazier & Scott Anderberg, eCollege
In this session, product developers from eCollege will review the newest feature
enhancements to the eCollege learning platform. They will share some "tips and tricks" to help online faculty make better use of the eCollege online tools. At this
session eCollege staff will also solicit input from faculty on existing features they
would like to see changed/enhanced, and new features they would like to see
developed.
- Session #3: Tegrity (repeat of beginning workshop).

This session will provide an overview of what has happened at CU Online this past year and changes that are in store for 2003-2004. It will offer faculty an opportunity to tell us directly what you would like to see on our priority list. Topics include organization changes, updates on Blackboard and other technologies, and faculty support issues. A status update on our data-based decision making project and preliminary data on FCQs, course completion, rank of online faculty, and other findings will be shared.
