Leadership for Learning and Professional Practice in Diverse, Urban Communities

The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver has long been considered a top educator of teachers at the master's and doctoral levels.

In 2005, U.S. News and World Report placed UCD's SEHD at number 90 out of the 100 best Schools and Colleges of Education in the country. In 2006, we were ranked 70th in the nation out of the more than 1000 schools and colleges that produce teachers in the U.S. The SEHD is truly a school on the move – we hope that you will join us as we become one of the top 10 urban schools of education in the country.

Relevance

Our program is built on a foundation of knowledge. You learn all the fundamentals you need to be fully prepared to practice your craft, whether teaching in the classroom working in the research lab or serving as an administrator or policy-maker.

And we have a lively research program. School faculty have $38 million in grants, which amounts to about $8 million annually. Federal grants fund five Centers that are responsible for providing significant national direction in research and policy in urban school improvement, the training of paraprofessionals, and several areas of special education, including autism, early childhood special education, and over-identification of students with special needs. Our faculty also conduct considerable unfunded research, much of it focused on the diversity and equity issues that are integral to our work in university programs, schools and agencies.

Connection

We have extensive partnerships with regional schools, where you will practice those skills you have learned in the classroom. These partnerships benefit you as you establish a network of contacts and eventually seek permanent employment.

We integrate our work with several school-based groups that provide outreach services to the metropolitan community.

  • Our Counseling Center provides free counseling to the university's downtown Denver students and to families in Denver Public Schools.
  • The Evaluation Center helps educational institutions that require evaluation services for grants or simply to improve their work.
  • The Front Range BOCES for Teacher Leadership works with 19 local school districts to provide excellent professional development opportunities designed to foster student learning through teacher leadership.
  • Colorado Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) moves innovations in technology and data-driven decision-making into the daily practice of P-20 educators across Colorado.
  • The Colorado Principals' Center provides professional development opportunities for current principals and encourages teachers to consider a career as a principal.
