Bachelor's in Sociology
     
Students with a major in sociology can now complete all of the required courses for the BA degree through the CU-Online program. The required Sociology courses are offered online, but may only be offered specific semesters, so plan accordingly. (see the listing below for required course details) Race and Ethnicity, the course that meets the University diversity requirement, is also now available through CU-Online.

Program Description:

Sociology is the study of group life: its characteristics, changes, causes, and consequences. It combines scientific and humanistic perspectives in the study of urban and rural life, family patterns and relationships, social change, intergroup relationships, social class, environment, technology and communications, health seeking behavior, as well as social movements.

Degree Requirements:

Students must declare a major by the time they have completed 60 semester hours of coursework. A major in sociology is accomplished by completing a general core of 19 hours, plus a minimum of 15 electives in sociology, for a total of 34 hours, with an average grade of C (2.0) in all courses. At least 16 of the 34 hours must be upper division (3000-4000 level) courses. The maximum number of hours (required and elective) allowed in sociology is 48. Thirteen hours of required courses (see below) must be taken from CU-Denver faculty.


Required Courses:

  • Soc 1001- Introduction to Sociology- 3 credit hours (may be transferred in)
  • Soc 3001- Urban Sociology- 3 credit hours (may be transferred in)
  • *Soc 3111- Introduction to Research Methods- 3 credit hours
  • *Soc 3121- Introduction to Statistics- 4 credit hours
  • *Soc 4150- History of Sociological Theory- 3 credit hours
  • *Soc 4160- Contemporary Sociological Theory- 3 credit hours. (Soc 4150 must be taken before Soc 4160)

    NOTE- Soc 3001, Soc 3111 and 4150 are offered on-line in the Spring Semester only, Soc 3121 and 4160 are offered on-line in the Fall Semester only. Soc 1001 is offered on-line every semester, including the summer session.

    NOTE- The courses marked with an *asterisk must be taken from CU-Denver faculty.
