Literacy… Industrial Revolution…The Internet…

Picture giant dominos tipping in succession, one action invariably leads to another. Printing Press. CRASH! Scientific Revolution. BOOM! So on and so on… The question then becomes, what happens if we’re unaware of what’s going on, all around us? Are we unwittingly on course with Marshal McLuhan’s ‘Global Village’, or George Orwell’s ‘1984’? Will knowing about the past and how we’ve gotten to where we are today, help us understand where we’re going?

This course, International Dimensions of Technology & Culture (ENGR 3600) will give you the building blocks to view your world in a new way. ENGR 3600 is a history of science course that will provide you with a better understanding of how science, technology and international issues interrelate in a world that has become more interconnected and interdependent.

You’ll learn about the impact of technology on culture and society from an international perspective. Specifically, ENGR 3600 will cover Chinese, Indian and Middle Eastern technological contributions in world history and the global impact of Western science and recent technologies, including the World Wide Web. The content of this course will focus on the technical, organizational and cultural aspects of information and other technologies with an emphasis on their impact on third world countries.

ENGR 3600 will conclude with a look into the future of technology and society on a global scale. How will the internet shape our future? In the past, the freedom of information has shifted power and toppled regimes. And that information will lead to even greater advancements and so on and so forth…
