Why This Early Literacy Program?

This program is designed for teachers who:

  • Want to improve overall expertise and skill.
  • Lack formal credentials needed to adequately serve a diverse classroom.
  • Require schedule flexibility.
This certificate program allows teachers to take 9 semester credits in the specialty area of early literacy and apply these credits directly toward a full master’s degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in reading and writing, while simultaneously fulfilling the requirements toward a Colorado Reading Teacher Endorsement.

You’ll learn how linguistic and cultural diversity affect students' learning and how to tailor your instructions accordingly. You’ll also learn how to create rich environments in which learners experience purposeful language, both orally and literary.

Admission Requirements

You are required to have a Bachelor’s degree to apply to the Early Literacy Certificate program. A K-6 teaching license is not required, since this program would be appropriate for early childhood teachers and paraprofessionals.

To sign up for this program is easy. If you are not currently an active CU Denver student, to be accepted into this program you need to submit the Continuing and Professional Education pre registration application.

Once you complete the application, you’ll receive an email in 24-48 hours with your student ID and instructions on how to register. If you are currently an active student at CU Denver and have taken courses within the past year, all you need to do is register.
