By placing emphasis on the reading, writing, and oral language development of diverse student populations, this online graduate level program is at the forefront of the field. In this program you will focus on using theory, inquiry, and peer interaction to inform classroom practice so you truly can make a difference in your students' lives.

Why This Early Literacy Program?

This program is designed for teachers who:

  • Want to improve overall expertise and skill.
  • Lack formal credentials needed to adequately serve a diverse classroom.
  • Require schedule flexibility.

You’ll learn how linguistic and cultural diversity affect students' learning and how to tailor your instructions accordingly. You’ll also learn how to create rich environments in which learners experience purposeful language, both orally and literary.

Admission Requirements

You are required to have a Bachelor’s degree to apply to the Early Literacy Certificate program. A K-6 teaching license is not required, since this program would be appropriate for early childhood teachers and paraprofessionals.

To be accepted into this program, you'll need to:

  • Register as a non-degree student with the University
  • Complete the standard application forms
  • Send in two recommendation letters
  • Write a letter of intent which addresses your interest in the program as well as your ability to complete an online program

"What about after I graduate?"

Over the years, alumni of the Reading/Writing program have gone on to a variety of leadership positions around the state. Several alumni have become staff developers, working with teachers as Building Resource Teachers, Literacy Coaches and mentors. Others have moved into district level professional development and coordinator positions.
